Once upon a time

We are here

The static buildings of our bed and breakfast date from the 16th century and take you into a sentiment of intimacy of yesteryear.

Barabas, what's
in the name?

If you browse through the New Testament in the Bible, you will find the name Barabas.
To be clear, we are not preachers of the faith here, but it is all the more a reference to the various, religious uses the properties were once assigned (formerly as one).
Centuries ago, these stately mansions served as shelters for the Proosdij in Hertsberge, and this gave the neighborhood its much-needed allure.

We honor the activity of B&B Côté Canal & guesthouse Huyze Hertsberge, which previously housed here.

“I cannot pretend to feel impartial about the colors. I rejoice with the brilliant ones, and am genuinely sorry for the poor browns. When I get to heaven I mean to spend a considerable portion of my first million years in painting, and so get to the bottom of the subject. But then I shall require a still gayer palette than I get here below. I expect orange and vermilion will be the darkest, dullest colors upon it, and beyond them there will be a whole range of wonderful new colors which will delight the celestial eye.”

Sir Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill with his typical cigar, painted several famous Bruges views during his stay in Bruges, including our home on the Groenerei, dated October 16, 1948.

"Dog in window"

The world-famous Fidèle

Fidèle was often sleeping peacefully at his fixed spot, out the window, on the Green Rei.
He enjoyed the passage immensely and posed for many a lens.
This resulted in many postcards, phone cases and a scene in the movie ‘In Bruges’.
After many wonderful years, thousands of unique photos & endless love, Fidèle passed away in 2016.
The precious memory he created is still known to many of you.

Just type “Fidèle Bruges” or “dog in window” into the search engines and you’ll discover just how popular he was.

"In Bruges"

In Bruges is a 2008 British-American crime comedy shot largely in the city of Bruges (the rest in London).

just the three of us

Nice to meet you

We are Jill, Bert & corgi King George!
For several years we have formed a small, fine family.
With our enthusiastic corgi, our mini family is a true blessing and laughter is a daily occurrence.
Jill is often seen doing the little chores in the B&B.
She mostly helps behind the scenes in addition to a steady job she sticks to.
In addition, she loves gardening and creating fun corners.
Also, she is the resting point in the relationship.

Bert is the creative brain who perfectly knows how to turn the idea into reality.
There is no architect involved here, this is by feel, from experience through frequent travel and with an eye to the future.
With so much entrepreneurship, we literally and figuratively share joys and sorrows.
Getting up with a smile every day, that’s our goal.
